| History | For most of its history NBC's FM station, the station first went on the air on January 11, 1940 with the call letters W2XWG on a frequency of 42.6MHz, although NBC had been conducting tests on the FM band since April, 1939. W2XWG moved to 45.1MHz by March, 1941 and changing its calls to W51NY in 1942. In 1946, it moved to the new FM band as WEAF-FM at a frequency of 97.3. By 1947, the call letters had been changed to WNBC-FM, and the station moved to its present frequency, 97.1, in 1948. The name of the station was changed to WRCA-FM in October, 1954 and changed back to WNBC-FM in May, 1960. Switched to all-news WNWS on June 18, 1975, then to WYNY on 1/1/77. WYNY changed from Adult Contemporary to a Country format on July 1, 1987 and was sold to Emmis in 1988. Country WYNY moved to 103.5 on 9/22/88, exchanging frequencies with WQHT (Hot 103), which became Hot 97 on this frequency. |
