| History | Known throughout most of its history as WOR-FM, this station first went on the air on 2/28/40 as W2XOR at a frequency of 43.4MHz, later moving to 43.5. On April 1, 1941, it become the first commercial FM station in New York, taking the call letters W71NY and moving to 47.1MHz. On November 1, 1943, the call letters were changed to WOR-FM, changing again to WBAM (named after the station's owner, Bamberger's Department Stores) on January 1, 1944. WBAM moved to 96.5 on the new FM dial in 1945 and to 98.7 in October, 1947. It became WOR-FM in 1948, broadcasting with more than a year`s interruption in the mid-50`s. Now owned by RKO, WOR-FM adopted a progressive rock format on July 30, 1966 and changed to a Top 40/oldies format in 1967. Call letters changed to WXLO on October 23, 1972, which featured an Adult Top 40 format though the 70`s. A disco/soul format was introduced in 1980 and the call letters were changed to WRKS (Kiss FM) on August 1, 1981. Kiss FM was purchased by Emmis in 1994, and has featured a range of urban formats. |
